History
of Strathmore Lodge
Jacob Valdone Lightheart and G.E. Lightheart purchased land on Bute Street in 1910 from Albert Beck for the purpose of
building a brick apartment building. The estimated cost of the
building in 1910 was $250,000.00
and the building permit was $1.00. The Lighthearts were experienced
in building apartments and real estate businesses, with
several family members involved in various aspects of both. Brick
apartment buildings were becoming the vogue in the
West End
but this was still a little off of the ideal
areas around Robson Street. The building was christened
the Royal
Alexandra Apartment by Jacob Lightheart, in 1913.
In
1927, the building sustained damage after a fire on the top
two floors. With many alterations, it was reopened with a new
name, the Strathmore Lodge Apartment. The building was owned by
the Lightheart’s until the mid- 1980s.
Strathmore Lodge was purchased by local
investors in 1985 from the Lighthearts.
